Understanding Moisturiser: What It Is and What It Does for Your Skin

Do we really need to moisturise? Or is it all beauty industry hype? Well, let’s look at what a moisturiser actually does so you can make an informed decision.

Body moisturiser is a skincare product designed to hydrate and protect the skin. It is valuable for maintaining skin health and preventing dryness or irritation. Regardless of skin type, moisturisers help to restore the skin's natural moisture balance, creating a protective barrier against environmental damage such as pollution, harsh weather, and indoor heating.

Body moisturisers work by delivering water and nourishing ingredients to the skin’s surface. They help lock in moisture, ensuring the skin remains soft, supple, and hydrated. Most moisturisers sit atop the skin creating an extra layer of protection. This is particularly important because factors like aging, exposure to sun, or harsh products can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness, irritation, and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This doesn’t mean none of the product is absorbed. You still want everything that touches your skin to be as natural as possible because some of it will end up inside your body.

So, moisturisers aren’t imperative. Lots of people survive perfectly well without moisturising. But they are valuable skin health care and they can prevent damage to one of your body’s largest organs, making it stay stronger for longer.

Biode has a couple of moisturising products, but let’s use our Biomenities Into the Clouds Body Lotion as an example of what goes into a moisturiser and what it can offer your skin.

Olive Oil: The Nutrient Powerhouse

Olive oil is renowned for its hydrating and nourishing properties. Packed with antioxidants, such as Vitamin E and polyphenols, it protects the skin from oxidative stress and environmental damage. Olive oil is also rich in essential fatty acids, which help to replenish the skin's moisture barrier, making it an excellent ingredient for dry or sensitive skin. Its emollient properties help soften and smooth the skin, while its anti-inflammatory benefits can soothe irritated or inflamed skin.

 Sunflower Oil: Lightweight and Nourishing

Sunflower oil is a lightweight oil that absorbs easily into the skin, making it ideal for those who want hydration without a greasy residue. It’s high in Vitamin E, which acts as a potent antioxidant to protect the skin from free radicals and premature aging. Sunflower oil also has a high concentration of linoleic acid, a fatty acid that helps to maintain the skin's natural barrier, promoting moisture retention and preventing transepidermal water loss (TEWL).

Coconut Oil: Deep Hydration

Coconut oil is known for its deep moisturizing properties. It penetrates the skin easily, providing intense hydration and creating a barrier to lock in moisture. Coconut oil also contains antimicrobial properties, which can help with skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. Its high fatty acid content, particularly lauric acid, supports skin cell repair, while its natural fragrance adds a tropical touch to your moisturising routine.

Our moisturiser is scented with a blend of essential oils. They don’t just smell lovely, every one of them has a skincare function as well.

May Chang Essential Oil: Uplifting and Toning

May Chang essential oil is a lesser-known but highly beneficial oil in skincare. Known for its uplifting, citrusy scent, it has antimicrobial and astringent properties that help tone the skin. May Chang oil can also help reduce excess oil, making it ideal for combination and oily skin types. Additionally, its invigorating fragrance can uplift the senses, offering a refreshing and energising boost.

Cedarwood Essential Oil: Soothing and Balancing

Cedarwood essential oil is prized for its calming and grounding aroma, but it also has many benefits for the skin. With its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, it is effective for soothing irritated skin and addressing issues like acne or eczema. Cedarwood also helps balance the skin’s oil production, making it suitable for both oily and dry skin types.

Patchouli Essential Oil: Rejuvenating and Healing

Patchouli essential oil is well-known for its healing properties. It encourages skin cell regeneration, which makes it a great ingredient for tackling signs of aging like wrinkles and fine lines. Patchouli also has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory qualities, making it beneficial for treating skin conditions such as dermatitis, acne, and dry patches. Its rich, earthy scent adds depth and warmth to any body moisturiser blend.

Lavender Essential Oil: Calming and Healing

Lavender essential oil is a versatile and popular ingredient in skincare for its calming, soothing, and healing properties. It helps calm irritated skin, reduce redness, and promote faster healing of minor cuts or blemishes. Its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties also make it effective for acne-prone skin. Lavender’s soft, floral fragrance is widely known for its stress-relieving and relaxation-inducing effects.

Rosemary Essential Oil: Invigorating and Clarifying

Rosemary essential oil is valued for its invigorating, herbal scent and its benefits for oily and congested skin. It helps to clarify the skin by reducing excess oil production and cleansing the pores. Rosemary also has antioxidant properties, which help protect the skin from environmental stressors and promote a youthful complexion. It is known to stimulate circulation, which can lead to improved skin tone and texture.

A good body moisturiser not only hydrates the skin but also nourishes and protects it.

By choosing natural moisturising ingredients like olive oil, sunflower oil, and coconut oil, you can provide your skin with deep hydration and essential nutrients. Essential oils further enhance moisturisers by providing a range of benefits and offering aromatic, sensory pleasure.

Incorporating these natural ingredients into your skincare routine ensures that your skin remains healthy, balanced, and glowing.
